Without the benefit of experience in the use of FLAC it was decided to use shear and bulk moduli directly related to the spring stiffnesses used with WALLAP, although it was recognised that this would underestimate soil stiffness. The spring stiffnesses used by WALLAP to represent the complex stress-strain behaviour of the continuum were those that had, for similar materials, given good predictions of wall movement in the past. The selection of soil strength parameters used in the design were based on experience. Two commercially available computer programs, WALLAP 3.12 and FLAC 2.25 were used at the design stage to calculate pile deflection and bending moment profiles.
